BMW M3 Camshaft Sensor

Hey everyone. After some times i did finally find something that drives me nuts and can figure it out. BMW M3 6 inline, E36 chassis for USA Market. It is version with 245 horse power. Anyone have idea what is cam sensor?? Is it Hall, magnetic? I cant take readings cause cant make it work. Or i burn him or simply does not work. At moment using simply one hall sensor and car goes very, very nice. But i am trying to figure it out what type of sensor it is!! Have 3 pins, but whatever i try it, cant make it work, the OEM one. Anyone?

The US spec is the single butterfly engine?

Its a Mag sensor,


Yellow - signal
Black - 0v
Screen - Screen


Yellow is the middle pin

Dear Martin, many thanks for reply but that reff/sync capture is a bit wrong. My cranck sensor is definetly HALL. But maybe i have hall and mag? I will try it out! Thanks!



And yes, it is single buterfly engine. (slow one, 245 HP)

Dont the M50`s have Hall crank sensors?

I know BMW has gone between Mag and Hall quite a few times, the N52`s are hall all the way through...


Ive never had issues with BMW sensors.
This is the S50B30 ive done....Multiple butterlfy

Your engine is the S52, which is basically the M52. Completely different to the S50 as you can see in the pictures.

I have done an M52 before, ill have a look if i can find the map that it used on an M800....was a long time ago.
Im pretty sure the ref was hall,,,cant remember the Sync though...ill try and have a look for you.

Hey I can help you. I am running a m52b28 on a M600 using a m50 head with m50 sensors and S52 cams. You have 3 wires I see, this makes for an easy setup.

Lemme start up my laptop and give you a few settings. And I am using all stock bmw sensors.

Sync sensor is Hall / Fall

My CRIP is 683.4 but I am using the timing cover off a m50 so my Ref sensor is on the front of the engine and is Mag..

I am with Pro Technik in Houston, Texas. If you need any thing else give us a call. Our E36 Race car is in the final stages of race prep but is currently running track days.

As for the wires, you need to connect the grounds for all the engine sensors B16. B2 needs to connect to the Yellow wire on your sensor. The Red wire goes to engine 8v (A12) and the black wire is the shielding and ground so it goes to engine 0v (B16) If you call me tomorrow I can get any other questions answered for you.
