M800 button gearshift

Postby Lorcan on Thu Jul 13, 2023 6:13 pm

Our dragbike is equipped with a 3 speed planetary gearbox operated by two solenoids and a single button wired to digital unput 1. 1st gear is engaged all the time, there is no neutral. A CO2-powered clutch prevents the bike from moving at idle. Press the button once to operate the solenoid for 2nd gear, which overrides 1st, and again for the 3rd gear solenoid which overrides 2nd. Press again to release deactivate both solenoids and go back to first gear once the bike has come to a stop.

A few years ago we had two protections built in to the map to prevent problems.

1) The bike could not shift from 3rd back to 1st if the bike was moving i.e. during a run

2) There was a delay built in to prevent double-shifting i.e. 1st to 3rd within tenths of a second by accidentally touching the button.

Somewhere along the line we've lost these protections by reverting to an old map, and the guy who wrote them can't remember what he did. He remembers it was complicated!

Where would I start to look in my old maps for what was done? I know how to compare two maps, I just don't know where to look! Any ideas?

I found this, maybe a timer, in Aux Output 3, which only operates above 40% thottle. What does "100" mean, on?

Do you have ECU logged data from when you know you had these protections active in the ECU config? By default the ECU config is embedded in the log file, if you go to the tools menu and select view device configuration ECU manager will open the embedded configuration, if available. The file that ECU manager opens won't have a recognisable name, but you can "save as" and rename as convenient.

In very broad terms the 100 will usually mean on.
You can post ecu files here, I'm sure someone will take a look through for you.

Yes, I've been using "view device config" to look at configurations in just that way, using the compare files feature, except I don't really know what I'm looking for. I can't be 100% sure but the older of these two files (RRRMay17) definitely blocked a double-shift whereas the new one (Sportsman) allows it. Appreciate any help!

Have had a quick look so far..... it's made my head hurt  I'll have a proper look over the weekend. What's the et and speed of this bike of yours? I see a speed table that only goes to 200 mph? Cheers.

Edit: My assumption is you do the burnout in top, then single button press gets it in to first and roll to the line.. Is this correct? It's not directly related to what we trying to discover, just getting an understanding.

6.54 and 218mph are our best, not sure which speed table you are looking at but ground speed is accurate up to 223mph (just after the finish).

You're correct that the burnout is in top gear (3rd), then shift to 1st when stationary (one press of the button) and toe the bike to the line. I have an idea that digital input 1 (gearshift) is linked to an Aux output which switches the 2nd and 3rd gear solenoids on in series, but how the two safeties work I don't know. They are important, as double-shifting 1st to 3rd with an accidental double-press makes me think there is another gear available. I can't hear the engine above the wind noise. There is a light on the dash to say I'm in 3rd, but I'm kind of busy keeping the bike straight and I sometimes don't see it and go for another gear. Shifting 3rd to 1st doesn't do any engine damage, it just revs to the limiter like I'm in neutral and loses me a race, but I'd like to reinstall what we had in 2017 so that that doesn't happen, without copying the whole map and losing everything else we've changed since then.

So.... I've spent some (too much  ) time on this, and I have to say that I have no idea how it's all working  . I can see the Dig 1 input configured as gearshift up, but all I can find using that is ign output 5 set up as a status on/off channel. Ign output 6 references drive speed (up to 200, but I don't know where this is coming from) versus ORB table set 2 status (from aux 8). Then aux out 1 is a table of ign 6 / ign 5 duty, this seems to be the only output that has a relation to dig 1 that is driving something external. Aux table 3 is a timer / Thr Pos table that must be related to something I guess.

Setting aside what appear to be tuning changes and setup evolution, there are differences in the polarity of some of the status channels between the 2 files.

Sorry I can't figure it out, pro bike experience isn't helping me here.

Thanks very much for looking anyway, Sean, I appreciate it. If I had the bike here and nothing else to do all day I could probably sort it out myself eventually, but it lives 3 hours away and I sadly have to work for a living still! Maybe we'll get the bike back to the guy who set up the protections intially and hope his memory improves

Is there some kind of map which shows which inputs, switches and outputs are connected? From trawling through the map I can see the following.

Aux out 1 goes to ignition duty 5 and 6. No idea what these are.

Aux out 3 is ON above 40% throttle. Maybe to do with anti-lag, but ORB has its own setting of 55%.

Aux out 6 goes to switched input 6, 100% with the throttle shut and 0% the rest of the time.

Aux out 7 is some kind of boost overrun switch.

Aux out 8 goes to Switched input 1 and ORB table set 2.

More notably...

Ign out 5 goes to Dig input 1, which is the gearchange button, and Ign out 6 goes to aux 8 duty which references drive speed. I'm confident this is related as I wouldn't want to engage 1st gear above 40mph and the table seems to show that. Even if I'm talking to myself here it's useful to make notes! :D
