Problem with ref/sync

Postby manuel on Thu Mar 19, 2009 6:59 am

Hello everybody,

I can't get my ref/sync synchronized. I get a stable signal from my magnetic ref sensor and from a hall sync sensor.
See attached Ref Sync Capture. But I always have the "error no sync signal" and "error sync signal".

Does anybody have an idea what the problem might be?

My settings are as follows:
Ref/Sync mode 5
Crank Ref Teeth 40
Tooth Ratio 50
CRIP 326,5
REF Sensor type 2
REF Sensor edge pol. 1
REF trigger voltage 0,1
Sync Sensor type 1
Sync sensor edge pol. 1
Sync trigger voltage 0

Ref Filter table, Magnetic Sensor levels and Sync Filter table are set as suggested by MoTeC.

Thanks for your help!

Try with sync trig voltage 4V.

Its the voltage output of your sync sensor, try a 4.7k maybe larger to 0v
I think its just not making the trigger level.

What engine is this?

Do you realy use the correct Ref/Sync Mode?
For me it looks as if you have a XY-1 triggerwheel AND a one-tooth-wheel on the same shaft.

In mode 5 the ref-sgnal has to be provided by the crank and the Syn-signal by the cam (one missing-teeth-ref-signal per crank revolution, one sync-signal per one cycle=2revs)

Thanks for your ideas

@ Mazi
I've already tried with trigger voltage 4,0 and some other values, but still the same errors.

@ Martin
It's a V4 Honda VFR 750 engine from 1996. We are trying to replace the old carburetor by a new fuel injection system. We are already using a 4.7k. Furthermore we are using a Dietz Hall sensor that needs 10-30V supply. So + is connected to the battery and not to the 8V motec.
Do you think the offset of the signal is the problem?

@Lip
I think ref/sync mode is right. I have a 40-1 tooth wheel on the crankshaft and a single tooth wheel on the camshaft.

you cannot set the trigger voltage with hall sensor selected.

If you can install PULLUP resistor then you can set the ECU to MAG sensor and then set your trigger levels.
When in hall mode it will trigger at 3.odd volts, motec will be able to advise.

So get your sync sensor to go across the trigger voltage and it must sync.

Some time ago I was a advised by Ross B. tech support of MoTeC Melbourne, that the trigger voltage for a Hall effect sensor was 2.x volts. This is an internal fixed value. The precise trigger level was not provided.

The trigger voltage in the setup only applies to Mag sensor selections.

Martin and PaulS are correct. However I would be checking the wiring for the Hall Sensor to find out why it isn't switching to 0V and why it only has a 1V range. If you fix the Sync sensor trigger it should sync up.

Thanks guys. :D

The wiring of the sync was wrong. I added one more resistor and a transistor. Now I have a nice signal that switches from 0V to 4.5V.
Synchronization is fine now.

Motec:

Would a selectable trigger level for hall mode be possible?

Newer Toyota engines like the 1GR-FE and others have 5v Hall sensors on the Cam`s They dont switch down to 0, neither to they float higher than 1.2 volts. Still nice square wave though

Nissan going same route with the VQ35HR, ill post ref/sync capture in the near future. Its got 4 Cam sensor`s, all the biasing resistors will be messy
