Hello everyone,
I should not be asking this question here but recently I here a buzz that certain tuners out there use their own open source software to map the ECUs, well I for instance reached a dead end when the tuner told me that he cant give me my password back but he will wipe of the ecu for me (since he is afraid that i will get hold of his software? to me its load of crap the ecu doesnt store the software anyway) , anyhow thats what Shane T does too according to some of his videos out there online.

Just asking, what type of other software packages exist if anyone knows any and what disadvantages the motec's original one have for people to opt that route if any.

SInce this is in the 400/600/800 ECU forum I will assume you are talking about those ECUs. Don't confuse ShaneT's M1 ECU Firmware packages as those are completely different. In those ECUs there is a unique software package that you purchase a license for.

The configuration for the Mx00 ECU can be password protected by the tuner to protect their intellectual property (calibrations for OEM sensors, strategy for boost control, ignition & fuel maps and cam timing maps for certain engine combinations, etc). He may have configured his version of MoTeC ECU Manager to help him tune, but there isn't any magic calibration that you can't do your self with access to the right tools and a lot of time. If he wipes the ECU you will just have to re-do the configuration yourself (or have another tuner do it).

I know that some folks will use an engine simulation software to build a VE-map of the engine, from there you could produce an initial fuel and ignition timing map. It's a great start, but you can still just map the engine on the dyno using the typical tuning techniques and get the same result -- it just takes more time.
