Upgrading M400 firmware

Hello,

I am currently working on a 1976 Norton Challenge (2 cylinders of a Cosworth DFV engine) with a Motec M400 ECU with V2.33 ECU manager software. The software version is 2.3.3.6 (Hex 2.33K). Due to troubles getting the engine to run repeatably I wanted to use the oscilloscope functionality included in the version 3.3 and up software to look at the crank and cam phase sensor traces. When trying to upgrade the ECU using V3.50L of the software downloaded from your website I get a 'Device is not in loader' error and the upgrade process quits. Is this ECU compatible with the latest software? Any assistance in overcoming this issue is appreciated.

Thanks,

Chris Cosentino

Hi

norton, good old british, are you in the UK,
we do alot of bikes so might be able to help,
it shouldn't be a problem upgrading M400 > v3.3,
I've done upgrades and downgrades with any major issues
are you using UTC or older type CAN cable

Regards

Steve thanks for the response. We are in the US, near NYC. Using the parallel port CAN cable. It seemed like the upgrade would be simple but once you get an error message all bets are off! The computer is a Dell WInXP laptop that has had no other problems installing other Motec software.

Thanks,

Chris

THis is an unusual problem. I assume that it is V3.5L that you are using and not V3.3? (You have mentioned both in your post?)
Are there any other CAN devices connected to the ECU? If so can you dis-connect them and check that your CAN wiring is OK.

Ross,

Yes, it is V3.5L from the website. I mentioned V3.3 because that is the revision that added the scope functionality. There are no other devices connected to the ECU. I was able to do the upgrade from 2.2 to 2.33 without an issue but had problems with the 3.50L upgrade. We did manage to track down the problem (non-ECU related) and the bike now runs. We'll have it at Pukekohe, NZ next weekend for the vintage motorcycle festival if anyone Motec-savvy will be in the area.

Thanks,

Chris

When using ECU manager to upgrade the ECU firmware on a M400/M600/M800, you must ensure that the CAN Data Rate is set to the 1mbit (default ) rate. This is because the ECU can only communicate at this rate during the upgrade process. To check the CAN data rate click on Tools-->Options-->Communications Tab and then set the CAN data rate in the drop down list to 1mbit and you should be able to upgrade the firmware.
