Unable to Start - M800 & IEX

Postby FAT245 on Sun Oct 23, 2016 9:35 pm

Hey guys,

I am having issues trying to get my car to start, or even try to.
Base File & SYNC REF Capture Attached

Engine: Ford Windsor 5.0L
Trigger: 36-1 (Missing Tooth is at 90-95*)
Sync: High / Low Level Sensor (Rising Edge @ TDC Compression #1)
Injectors: ID/YP 1000cc (1015cc @ 43.5PSI) (Wired in Firing Order 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8)
Base Fuel Pressure: 43.5PSI

Motec IEX Module
IGN Mode 100
Coil Count 8

Coil Type: is LS D585
Coils are grounded to the same point as the M800
Wired in Firing Order 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8
These have tested out fine (Set IGN Mode to 1, with 1 Coil and jumper lead to each output)

First Issue is trying to work out my CRIP but the engine refuses to fire.
Engine cranks at about 120-150RPM, It is a Heavily Springed Solid Roller Motor w/ 12.5:1 Compression.

My SYNC Sensor never actually comes back down to 0V could this be causing an issue?
I know there is something I am missing and I am ready to rip my hair out.

All Other Sensors work and when cranking the car comes into sync but it seems we don't get enough spark output.
Have tried a variety of CRIP

Also when cranking i have seen the 'INJ DUTY MAX ERR' Occur which is concerning.

Motec Hardware is:

Please help, I am at my witts end

Hi Nathan,

I took a quick look over your settings, the trigger settings all look ok to me and if you are seeing sync status in when cranking then it sounds like the input side of the ecu is happy.
So I think your problem is on the output side...

There have been a few posts that suggest those D585 coils wont work with the IEX. This is because during cranking (below 400RPM) the IEX gives a very long dwell time and those coils dont like it, there are rumours that they self discharge at dwell times over about 5.5ms.
I know Motec used to do a modification to the IEX to make it compatable with the LS1 coils but I still dont think it will work for you. You will have to talk to a dealer to confirm if there are any other options.

Here's one such post: viewtopic.php?f=19&t=2106

If there is no other option you will have to rewire the coils direct to the ECU and run in wasted spark.

Hi Nathan,

I have unlocked your account, so you can access it again.

With the Modifications to the IEX, this can be sent in to us via a dealer, we will make the changes and then send it back via that dealer.

Hey Adam,

Thanks for the Response,
Wiring the Coils directly to the M800 is going to me a major change as all the wiring looms have been completed and booted!

If the problems exist with the 'D' Series Coils D580/D585 then ill just swap them out for Normal LS Coils which don't have this discharge feature.

I have Called Support and will await to hear from them.

I did have another thought on rectifying this issue by setting up my Dwell Table with an RPM Axis, and have anything under 400RPM with 0.1ms so we just rely on the Dwell from the IEX

Thanks Stephen,
I am going to try a set of Normal LS2/L76 Coils on the engine to see if any difference is made.
If the engine comes to life I will send the IEX Down so we can have it modified.

Does the Modification eliminate the Issue Completely?

The mod limits the dwell to around 7.5 ms during cranking. If this is still too long for the coil then it wont help you.

A side effect of this mod is the ignition timing is also retarded during cranking so you cannot do the CRIP correctly until the engine is running.
