Ref/sync suggestions (NEED HELP)

Postby Tommy on Sat Oct 16, 2010 7:12 am

I have started my project (nightmare) and hitting some brick walls.
1982 Ferrari 308 GTSi. Converting to COP and SMFI via M800. The problem that I'm having is trying to understand and resolve my ignition issue. The 308 has a pick up at the flywheel to check the engine speed and position. Dual distributors controlled by Magneti Marelli Digiplex MED801A. I guess the flywheel could be used as a reference?? What's the best way to provide the 800 with the sync signal to make it work?
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

The tabs on the back of this (Non-Fezza) flywheel are used to provide magnetic or hall trigger.
Do you have anything like that on your flywheel?

If there is a pick up at the flywheel - then that can be used.
What does it look like?

After having a closer look at the flywheel (still in the housing) and with the help of some Ferrari members I can verify that there are 3 magnetic pick ups.
1 for cylinder 1-3 TDC
1 for cylinder 5-8 TDC
1 for engine speed .
Will I be able to utilize these pick ups to achieve non wasted spark and SMFI?
PS some Ferrari members have installed a reference a wheel at the crank to get the ref, however they have not used Motec. Instead they used an electromotive system to control the ignition system.

Hi There,

I am looking at a similar project what make/type of COP are you using ?. I was thinking of using either Bosch P100-T or P50:-

http://www.bosch-motorsport.de/pdf/components/ignition_coils/Coil_P100_T.pdf

and :-

http://www.bosch-motorsport.de/pdf/components/ignition_coils/Single_P50_P50_M.pdf

The depth from the top of the spark plug to the cam cover is about 90mm, both of the above maybe too long ?

Any suggestions ?

Cheers Jay

Nice - I've been looking for something like these.
I take it that the ion sensing feature is used for knock ?

Jay,
it all depends on the length.
I'm using the COP's from Denso found on motorcycles. Perfect fit and length for my application.

For boosted apps the P100-T is The Way, real motorsport coil not an OEM unit with OEM spark energy.
