Ok, if I wanted to upgrade
Would I......
1. Update the manager in the laptop to the latest version
2. Upgrade the UTC with it unplugged from the ECU
3. Upgrade the ECU
And hopefully it should work ??
Apart from the ref/sync capture mode, what other benefits would I see / use ??

You can have both versions of software installed on your PC.
New UTC firmware will work with old version of ECU software also.
In the latest ECU Manager you will find (Help > Read me...) loooong list of changes from 2.3 version.
If you are not happy with new ECU software You can downgrade your ECU again.
