The question of how to add or retard advance is really either a question of how to do it in the s/w or how to do it in theory/practice
My understanding:
Is that the detonation tends to become more probable with increasing advance.
Also the torque comes up fast as the advance is added but then hits a plateau. As even more advance is added the torque does not increase too much - but the cylinder head temp increases and detonation probability increases.
Also with too much advance the EGT tends to decrease as more energy is getting soaked into the head and piston crown with too much advance - resulting in less heat present in the exhaust.
I guess you either need:
1) a knock sensor
2) an EGT sensor
3) A dyno and not go overly aggressive on the ignition advance...
Or some combination of the 3 options.
