CAN integration

Postby Alex B on Wed Sep 02, 2009 7:03 am

Hello mates,

Most current production cars have CAN systems integrated, so there is increasing need to get some data from car's CAN and also send some data to the systems as well. So, to better integrate Motec ECUs in such scenarios I would like to know the following

- what software/hardware is used to analyze CAN messaging
- will the additional hardware be required establish CAN communication between OEM CAN and Motec ECUs?

Any recommended books, papers or tech. notes are welcomed.

Best regards
Alex

The M800 does not have any functionality for the user to be able to make CAN messages to work with factory ECUs, we would do this type of work here. Some of the development done for the new EVO 10 and latest Sti has involved writting CAN templates into the M800 software.

Analyzing CAN messages is a fairly convoluted process that is not all that easy and can require a fair bit of experience. You can comercially buy CAN Analyzers but I am not sure that there is a lot of information on what to do with the analyzed data. There is also no real standard as to how the message channel lengths get divided up so it can be a bit of a headache as you are flying blind and the car manufacturers will not give out their protocols.

We use our ADL/ADL2/ADL3s to mimic factory CAN messages as they have the software to allow the user to write templates but it is not easy.

Hi Mark,

Some suggestions where to look/buy hardware/software?
Perhaps some reference materials as well?

Best regards

For CAN Bus analysis, you could look <insert the sounds of the forum moderator unplugging Toby's keyboard>

As someone mentioned in another part of the forum, it would be useful if MoTeC made available a .dbc file (motor industry standard CAN details) of their CAN bus messsages as their terminology differs from the industry norm in some respects thus making it harder for many to understand.
