Conversion from single IGN distributor to pencoils

Postby cotje on Thu Jul 16, 2015 7:58 am

Hi all,

My car (Lancia Delta EVO) runs great on the old but legacy single Ignition and distributor setup. Recently I converted this to a four ignition setup with the VW/AUDI pencoils. I wired it in fire-order, setup the mode to 4 coils and could run a successful output test with all pencoils firing at the correct cilinder. All seems to be just OK, but the car does not start on this setup! Reverting back to the old setup fires the car up immediately.

What did I miss? I'm lost at the moment...

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

Have you reconfigured the ECU to support the use of 4 individual coils? Which Ref/Sync mode are you running?

Hi Stephen,

Yes, I configured it for 4 coils and adjusted the dwell. The ouput test fired at the correct cilinders.
The REF/SYNC is unchanged at 22 (Ford Cosworth/Lancia). Do I need to change this? This car has 2 SYNC touths and 4 REF on the Crank.

I will send you a link to the two maps! Hope you can help me.

Stephen, any idea what is missing in my map and/or setup?

Was thinking of converting this to wasted-spark and see what will happen.

Did you add a 4-channel ignitor to trigger the coils, or are those smart coils that have a built-in ignitor?

David, these are the VW/AUDI(115D) coils and only need the trigger signal from the ECU.

OK guys, the car is running now :) :)

But, someone please tell me why? This is the story:

First non running setup wiring (according firing order):
IGN 1 > A3 > Cilinder 1
IGN 2 > A4 > Cilinder 3
IGN 3 > A5 > Cilinder 4
IGN 4 > A6 > Cilinder 2

Running setup:
IGN 1 > A3 > Cilinder 4
IGN 2 > A4 > Cilinder 2
IGN 3 > A5 > Cilinder 1
IGN 4 > A6 > Cilinder 3

Seems to be related to phasing?! Fire order on the running setup is also there but starts at IGN3.
What should I alter to get the first setup running? I'm guessing CRIP ... which is at 90 now for the distributor setup.

I think your CRIP is 360 degrees out, (or your sync signal is defined incorrectly). You were firing at the top of the exhaust stroke, not the compression stroke, until you changed the wiring.

Try changing the CRIP to 450 deg BTDC and restoring the original wiring.

Exactly, we came to the same conclusion today! We got the car started on original wiring and CRIP on 450. Working now!

Thanks to all for helping out.
