Is it possible to have some form of traction control with a single wheel speed input ? ie a strategy which looks at rate of change of rpm / speed based on given gear and determine if the wheel is likely to be slipping excessively ?

i havn't tryied it but ofcourse it can ! it's called Source 5.
in traction parameters screen (after you set it up as "SLIP CONTROL" In function).
stand on the first row, "SOURCE" and press F1
you can read exactly what you can do, and mode 5 gets you exactly where you want.

Thats a good solution of the wheel speed sensor is on a non driven wheel and therefore the ECU can derive the driven wheel speed from gear and rpm.

Unfortunately what I require is a traction control strategy based on rate of change of the driven wheel when the sensor is on a driven wheel or speed sensor in the gearbox attached to the gearbox.

if you got gearbox speed, you can use this mode, you don't need the driven wheel speed.
one wheel speed is not enough, or more accuratly,
one wheel speed is confusing for ecu to determine weather there is wheel spin.

Unfortunately the M4/M48s cannot do RPM rate of change TC. The M400/600/800 can do it.

If you had an external device that could calculate an output relative to undesireable wheel slip you could send this to the M4 but this would require some more equipment that would make buying an Mx00 ECU much easier.
