Hey guys and girl's,

Ive been trying to connect to my m48 and am at a loss.
Heres tge situation so far:

Currently has a db9? (9-pin male connector) hard wired to tge ecu.

Running a female to female extension to get cord out of car.

Connected to other end is a male rs232 to usb.

Doesnt seem to connect when i open program up, ive tried hittinf the diagnostic option and it says ecu not connected in the grey bar at the top,
Have also tried retrieving data from ecu bht comes up with "connect ecu" and ive tried hitting that but it does nothing so not sure if thats how to connect or its a message telling me to connect.

The even weirder part is when i plug it all into the computer i get a tingle from the metal parts on the car.

Any help would be greatl appreciated.

Thanks

Mitch

All M48’s and early M4’s didn’t have direct RS232 level comms, it used a lower voltage TTL signal. The correct Motec PCI cable is needed to connect: http://www.motec.com/ac-cc-seriallogicl ... llogic-pc/
There are other DIY methods of achieving something similar (for instance FTDI TTL-232R) but you will need to have a reasonable idea what you are doing to get that working.

Thanks adam, well thats crappy news, 160 bucks for a cable is a little outrageous. Is there any information on doing it the otger way? Can get those cables for 45 bucks.

Sorry for the slow reply, this forum doesnt notify me of replies so its easy to forget about...

Its been many years but from memory you need just 3 connections from the FTDI cable to the M48. (Im sure I used the 3V3 version).

Note the forum software has cut the side of my image off so try right click>save image as.

I just finally connected my M48 to a Windows 7 laptop. Actually now i have managed to connect it to two laptops. You must have Windows 7 full or professional software, Win 7 Home will not work. Using a FTDI cable as Adam mentioned and installing Virtual PC then Windows XP Mode, then running the Motec program within the XP Mode environment. This took ages to figure out and no end of clicking and a bit of swearing.
