Hi Guys,
Just wondering if anyone would know the ignition settings for the setup we have. I have a Toyota 3rz with a motec m48 and a billet trigger wheel with 24 teeth and it doesn't have the flat that the standard trigger wheel has for top dead centre.

Where are these 24 teeth fitted - crank trigger or in a distributor? If you have 24 teeth on the crank do you have another single tooth cam/sync sensor fitted? What is the rest of your ignition setup like - single coil and distributor or multiple coils?

Hi Adam,
The billet trigger wheel is fitted in the factory location on the crankshaft. There is 4 individual coils with a motec CDI and there is no extra sensors off the cams.

You must have something to identify cyl TDC, or at least a cylinder at TDC firing stroke.
A multitooth wheel on it's own is no use for this.
So you either need to add a cam trigger, or create a reference on the crank trigger....ie a missing tooth or two

Further to what stevieturbo said, if you have 4 individual coils & a 4 channel CDI then that will need to be set up sequential. So that means your 24T crank wheel is OK as is but you will definitely also need a separate cam/sync sensor.

Can the ign outputs on the M84 not just be fired in pairs as wasted spark ? Or even just do the wiring to fire as wasted spark.

There are only two ignition outputs on a M48, so wasted spark may be an option depending on which CDI module the OP actually has. My original comment was possibly incorrect as I assumed all Motec CDI modules used the multiplexed type input as on the CDI8 (the one im familiar with) but I now see the 2 or 4 channel modules need one input per channel so he will quite possibly have to do wasted spark.
On top of that however the M48 really needs more teeth for a missing tooth type wheel with the recommended minimum being 36. So a sync sensor is still probably the best option.

So easiest/only would be a wasted spark setup anyway.
say 24-2 if it isnt able to do 24-1 ?
Although would be surprised if the Toyota engine doesnt already have a cam sensor somewhere.

Hi guys,
I have been in contact with the engine builder and he has informed me that there is a cam sensor in the engine. I think the tuner was saying something about a leading or trailing edge for the pickup was the setup he was going to use, does this sound about right? Thanks for all the help so far it has been great.
