M4 Base Maps

Discussion and support for MoTeC's earlier generation ECUs

Re: M4 Base Maps

Hey everyone, I hope it's ok posting in an old thread. I have a Westfield Clubman with a 16 valve 4AGE. It currently has a crappy old ECU. I have an opportunity to get a M4 for a good price, so was wondering if there is a base map for 16 valve bigport that I can use, before I fork out for the M4?
Thanks!

You will need to modify the distributor to work sequentially with the M4.

The top sensor has four teeth on it, you will need to cut three of them off and use this as the SYNC input.
The bottom 24 teeth are used as the REF input.
Jump on the MoTeC Website and look at one of the "T" drawings, the setup is there for a M4

It will also be simpler to use a Bosch 026 water temp sensor and a Delco air temp sensor. Most MoTeC Dealers have them. The standard TPS will work. but dont use the switch part of it. The standard MAP sensor can also be used but a calibration will need to be done for it otherwise just use a 1 bar Delco sensor.

Are you using the standard gray injectors? They will need to be set up as PEAK & HOLD injector type.

If you use the TVIS, an output will need to be assigned as a user table, set the axis as RPM and MAP or TPS

Thanks for all of that mate. Bit more involved than I realised. I'll read up on all of that and see how I go.

So the standard air and water temp sensors are not very well suited to the Motec then? I'll have a chat to my mechanic and tuner, I dare say the tuner will have the delco and bosch items in stock. If he has had much to do with Motec's he'll probably be aware of this anyway. If I can get away with using the standard MAP sensor I would like to, as I am not going to turbocharge or supercharge the engine, so I don't see why the standard unit would need replacing.

I'll have to check injectors, but at the moment I imagine it has standard injectors. In the near future though it will be getting 20 valve ITBs and bigger injectors from a 4AGZE. I imagine these will need to be set up the same as the standard ones would?

TVIS won't be an issue when the adapter and ITB go on.

Thanks for the help mate, I am guessing you have had a M4 on some kind of 4AGE?

The only other question is in regards to a base map for it. Is there one available anywhere?

Thanks heaps.

The standard Air temp and water temp can be used but a calibration will be needed to be done for them, The cost of a air temp sensor and water temp sensor is less hassle than trying to calibrate the standard sensors which is why I suggested its simpler to use the Bosch and Delco sensors.

Everything you have mentioned can be done ( and has been done ) with a M4 or other MoTeC ECU.

Yes, I have several 4AG's running MoTeC's however none of them are stock, also not using an M4

As for base map, Just start with the standard MoTeC map, change the REF/Sync setup to whats in the T drawing for the distributor, Find the M drawing for the Toyota Ignition module and set that up. The CRIP will be around 6 degree plus a multiple of 180 depending on which tooth you cut off.

I think the gray injector is around 2 Ohm so a injector current of 2.5A will work

Set up the TP, AT, map & ET sensor calibrations and you are ready to start tuning

You should use the TVIS as you will loose some low down torque on a bigport engine

Thanks for the help mate, I appreciate it. I have had a look for the "T" drawing and couldn't find it? Perhaps I am looking in the wrong place.

I have a good tuner in Toowoomba who knows his way around a Motec, so that will certainly help. Sounds like it shouldn't be TOO difficult to sort out.

Thanks again!
