need help asap w ignition on 2rz turbo/ motec

Postby Tkit213 on Sat Mar 16, 2013 12:17 pm

Hello, I need help putting together an ignition system ASAP for my setup, i have a distributor and the Motec M4 wont work with that from what im told.. info below:
.57 trim turbo
2rz-fe from a 96 tacoma (2.4l 4cyl) w dizzy
Motec M4 ECU
walboro 255 fuel pump

I need to know what ignitor and coils I should use or COP setup. on a budget. Do you have any ideas?

ls2 coils? ls1? newer 2rz stock coils?

I'm not sure why they say you cant use your distributor but if it is one of those types that has the coil and ignitor all built into then I agree - it could be difficult to work with.

I suggest you go for coils with built in ignitors as it makes the wiring easier, keeps costs down and there are good options available for not too much $.
The Toyota 1ZZ, 2ZZ, 1NZ, etc (varity of lengths) denso COP's work well in most situations up to about 25psi boost. I have even used the cheap chinese replacements from ebay with reasonable success.
LS1 or LS2's have more grunt and would be a good choices if you wanted to push in more than 30psi.

Thanks. The early 2rz has dizzy up to 96, 97 and newer i believe came with coils and ignitors. if i can use the stock 2rzfe coils/ignitor setup and be able to use it with the motec m4, then im good. my hopes are the car will be able to use them and I can have my buddy get it up n running by the weekend.

Since the M4 shares the ignition outputs with 4 out of the 5 aux outputs, I would suggest that you wire the coils wasted spark. i.e 2 coils wired to 2 ignition outputs - that way it at least leaves you with 3 usable aux outputs - say a fan, fuel pump and boost control or idle valve.

apparently I have the wrong head if I need to utilize a cam sensor. if all that requires is a crank angle sensor then awesome. any input?

If you run wasted spark ignition there are some ref/sync modes that dont need a sync sensor, but whether you can use them will depend on what type of crank trigger you have. Where does the ref signal come from and what sort of trigger pattern is it?

Is there an advantage in sequential injection?
and
Is it possible to use the distributor for the cam sensor?

idk what kind of crank trigger, would that be the stock crank sensor or another part that needs to be purchased??

What type of triggers does the stock engine use now? - is it only the distributor or is there a trigger wheel on the crank also? A brief google suggest's the 2RZ-FE has a 36-2 crank wheel and a 1 tooth trigger in the distributor - but I couldnt find mention if this applied to both early and late versions.

Only 95.5- 97.5 had the distributor so im assuming that is what the info is talking about. i believe it goes off the crank angle sensor and the distributor as mentioned for triggers.
