Sparkplugs won't fire

Hello I'm new here,

My english is not the best but I try.

I'm installing an M48 on my BMW(S14 Engine) instead of the distributor, I have made disk and a Hall-sensor so I can use a wasted spark coil(2x2) and sequential injection. Also I have made a crankdisk 60-2 with a mag-sensor

-When I rev the engine, the signal of the crank-sensor is ok. (Measured with a scope) After the 2 missing theeth the Voltage goes in +, so in the setup I have enterd ''Rise''

-When I rev the engine, The signal of the Camsensor looked a bit strange??? it's constant 2V but when the sync point(it's round) arrives it drops to 0v, goes up to 2V en drops again to 0V then it goes to 2V (just like 2 sync points in one rev???)
Please look into the drawing.

Maby this is not the problem that the plugs don't fire, I don't now???(plugs, leads and coil are new)

The Fuel injectors are working.

-When I connect the scope to the primaire coil I CAN NOT see a good signal of the coil???

I am not sure that I understand clearly, do you have a missfire or is the engine not running? If you have no spark the n of course it will not run but you also say that you rev the engine. do you mean that you are cranking the engine?

The first thing you should do is carry out an output test in the injectors, ignition outputs and any auxiliary outputs. (Main Menu/Adjust/Diagnostics/Output Test) This will confirm that you have the outputs correctly configured. If you have the injectors injecting fuel and no spark I would say that there is likely to be something wrong with the ignition wiring or set-up. What type of ignition module are you using?

The voltage from your sync sensor is not going high enough to trigger, you need to check the power supply to the sensor and its location. Are you ref or sync errors when you are cranking the engine? Is the Sync Status changing from "Not Synced" to "Synced"?

I make it clearly, I will try.

I crank the engine, it's not runnig

I have done the output test.
-Injectors; they are working,
-Ignition; is not working
-Aux1; is boostcontrol and the valve works
-Aux2; ignition2, not working
-Aux3; Thermofan it works
-Aux4; Fuelpump also ok.

The coil has 3 connections;
-1 for 12V, (I have measured while cranking and the voltage is stabile).
-1 for coil 1(cyl 1 and 4) ---->connected to pin 33 on M48
-1 for coil 2(cyl 2 and 3) ----> connected to pin 34 on M48

The wiring is ok, no shortcut.

Also the sync status change from "Not Synced" to "Synced" during cranking.

I have change the indicator from the hall-sensor and now I have a better/good signal

Also I have measured the signals on pin 33 and 34 of the M48, I can see that the signals are not good, but why not??? unfortunately I can't upload them at this time, I will try tommorow if you like.

In the Main Setup I have following;
Ref type; 2
Sync type; 1
ref/sync mode; 71
crank ref teeth; 60
tooth ratio; 50
crank index pos; 93.0
ignition type; 2
number of coils; 2
ign. dwell time; 3.0
ign. delay time; 50

Is the Setup correct?

Hallo Hans,

I hope im understanding you right


I think you need an "Igniter" (Ignition module) between the coil and ECU ignition output. Bosch makes one that is dual channel... part nr# 0 227 100 200. You can also buy this from Motec. (motec part# 41200)

Depending on the coil you run, some do have igition modules built in others dont. Ive never come across a BMW coil with built in ignition module... (could be wrong).

Martin is correct, you need to use an ignition module, the M48 is not designed to fire a coil directly. The module he suggests to use will work fine.

Your other settings look ok although I can not be sure about your Crank Index Position.

First of al thanks for your help!!!!

Today I have received the Bosch Ignition module from my local parts store.

This evening I have wired it up(exactly like drawing M29, Thanks Martin!) and I have done the ignition test again. Now I can see the sparks on 1&4 and 2&3!!!!

Then, for the first time ,I have start the engine and let it run for 1-2 minites(No diagnostic codes), after that I could feel that te igniter is very very hot!!!
I have checked The dwell time in the Setup; 3mSec.
After that I changed it to 0,1mSec. When it runs, again it gets very hot?

I have mount the ignitor(with the heat-paste) on a thick aluminium block to let the heat flow but is this high temp. normal??? I don't think so??

The Primaire resistance of the coil is 0,5 ohm, the same as the Mec717 and Mex718.

It appears that you have your "ign type" set incorrectly.
Type 1 suits almost all vehicles and all bosch style modules, type 2 suits some hondas and all MSD type ignition systems.
So you should change the number to 1.

The type basically means does the ECU supply power to turn on the module or does it supply a ground.
In your case you are turning the module off for 3 msec and on for the remaining cycle time, which at idle is a lot.
This situation is very bad for the module and as you have found out generates a lot of heat.
It may be damaged so if you have future missfire problems I would replace it.

It would be a good idea to have the modules mounted on a heat sink. Rember that the module`s effective duty will increase as you increase RPM, in other words, it will have less time to rest. So having a heat sink on the back of it will help the module to get rid of the heat generated as it works harder.

Thanks Martin, I agree.

now I have mount the modlue on a aluminium block, the heat can sink now.

I don't have drive on the road yet, but when I do that, I will check the ignitertemperature permanently.
